Headache is one of the most common illnesses around Australia, with nearly 15 percent of us using painkillers for a headache at any given moment. Since headaches are so widespread, a lot of us believe they’re just a part of life.
Nonetheless, a continuous headache or frequent headaches can be a sign that something is wrong. The consistent use of pain killers to combat headaches is similar to taking off the forewarning light that signals you to a problem with your car! Medication in most cases doesn’t cure your headache, it just provides a brief strategy to lower the pain.
Tension headaches and migraine are considered the most common types of headache with cluster headaches less common. Other types of headache can include sinus headache, rebound headache and exertion headache.
Headaches can be triggered through a wide range of factors including tension, altered posture, accidental injuries, medications, environmental factors such as powerful smells & pollution and dietary triggers. An often overlooked trigger to headache and some migraines is the influence of the neck joints and muscles. Known as cervicogenic headaches, as they orginate from the cervical spine, these headaches can often be effectively addressed with specific physiotherapy treatment.
Your Physiotherapist will take a detailed history, and conduct a thorough examination of your neck movement, joint and muscle tests and establish whether your neck may be implicated as a cause for your headaches.
Additional diagnostic testing for instance XRay or MRI may also be useful in some cases and if your therapists believes further medical assessment is warranted they will help facilitate this with your doctor.
Physiotherapy can be an extremely effective in assisting neck and posture related headaches by restoring the movement in your neck, reducing muscle tightness and addressing those influences in your daily activities that may contribute to ongoing irritation.
