Pain in the shoulder that can limit movement is a very common condition. The shoulder is a ‘ball and socket’ joint and has a high degree of flexibility of flexibility compared to most other joints, therefore there are a lot of structures around the shoulder, including muscles, tendons and cartilage, to help keep it stable that can be a source of pain.
Having good strength helps to support the shoulder, increase the range of movement and prevent against pain and ‘catching’ with movement. The shoulder is a ‘ball-and-socket’ joint, and what we are after is a good balance of strength and flexibility of the muscles around the shoulder – not only to help the arm move, but to keep the ‘ball’ of the shoulder joint in the middle of its ‘socket’ to help it work efficiently. If there is weakness or imbalance in these muscles, the shoulder can translate more with movement, causing ‘pinching’ and pain.
Sometimes too other structures can ‘refer’ pain to the shoulder – such as from the nerves, muscles or joints of the neck.

In order to determine the cause of your shoulder pain, your physiotherapist will take a detailed history to find out when and how your shoulder pain started, along with what things make it feel better or worse. Your physiotherapist will also conduct a full physical assessment of the various structures that make up the shoulder, looking at your movement, strength, flexibility and control, as well as other areas that may refer pain to the shoulder. Sometimes, your physiotherapist may refer you for x-rays or other imaging tests to get more information about the shoulder.
The initial objective of all shoulder injuries is to relieve pain and any inflammation, if present. Whilst the use of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) is common, ice-packs can be just as effective at helping relieve pain and inflammation.
One of the key goals of treatment is to restore range of movement to the shoulder, and improve muscle strength of the shoulder to help with stability and control of movement, which also helps to prevent injury recurrence. Your physiotherapist will likely prescribe you with a series of exercises for you to continue with to help look after and improve your shoulder function and comfort.
