Do I need a scan for my injury?

30 April 2026 · 4 min read · The Physio Studio

When something hurts, it is natural to want a scan to see exactly what is going on. But for most common muscle, joint and back problems, imaging early on does not change the plan — and can sometimes point you in the wrong direction.

Why scans are not always the answer

Scans are very good at showing structures, but they often show changes that are a normal part of ageing and are present in people with no pain at all. Finding one of these "changes" does not necessarily explain your symptoms, and can lead to worry about something that was never the problem.

When imaging is genuinely useful

  • After significant trauma, such as a fall or accident
  • When specific "red flag" symptoms are present
  • When the result would actually change your management — for example, before certain surgical decisions

What a good assessment does instead

A thorough physiotherapy assessment — your history, how the problem behaves, and a physical examination — can usually build a clear enough picture to start treatment safely. If a scan or referral would add something, your physiotherapist will tell you and help arrange it.

The bottom line

Scans are a tool, not a starting point. For most everyday injuries, the fastest route to recovery is a good assessment and an active plan — not imaging.
