Headache is one of the most common conditions in Australia, and because they are so widespread, many people assume they’re simply a part of life.
However a continuous headache or frequent headaches can be a sign that something isn’t right, and is worth seeking support to treat and manage.
Tension headaches and migraine are the most common types, with cluster headaches less common. Other types can include sinus headache, rebound headache and exertion headache.
Headaches can be triggered by a wide range of factors, including:
An often-overlooked trigger for headaches, and some migraines, is the influence of the neck joints and muscles. Known as cervicogenic headaches — because they originate from the cervical spine (neck) — these can often be effectively addressed with specific physiotherapy treatment.
Assessment. Your physiotherapist will take a detailed history and conduct a thorough examination — including your neck movement, and joint and muscle tests — to establish whether your neck may be implicated as a cause of your headaches. Additional diagnostic testing such as X-ray or MRI may be useful in some cases; if your therapist believes further medical assessment is warranted, they will help facilitate this with your doctor.
Treatment. Physiotherapy can be effective in helping neck- and posture-related headaches by restoring movement in your neck, reducing muscle tightness and addressing the influences in your daily activities that may contribute to ongoing irritation.

No. Physiotherapy is most relevant for headaches associated with the neck, such as tension-type and cervicogenic headaches. If your headaches may have another cause, we will encourage you to see your GP.
A physiotherapy assessment can help identify whether neck movement, stiffness or muscle tension may be contributing to your headaches.
If your headaches are new, severe, changing in pattern, or come with other concerning symptoms, please see your GP or seek medical care promptly.
