"How long is this going to last?" is one of the first questions people ask when back pain strikes. The reassuring news is that most episodes of back pain settle far more quickly, and more completely, than people fear.
For most people, acute lower back pain begins to improve within a couple of weeks and settles substantially over about six weeks. It does not always follow a straight line — good days and flare-ups are normal — but the overall direction is usually toward recovery.
Prolonged rest, high levels of worry about the pain, and avoiding movement altogether can all make an episode drag on. This is exactly where seeing a physiotherapist early can help — not because your back is fragile, but because the right guidance keeps you moving in the right direction.
See a health professional promptly if your pain follows a significant injury, is severe and unrelenting, or comes with symptoms such as numbness, weakness or changes to bladder or bowel control. These are less common, but worth checking.
If your back pain is not settling the way you would like, a physiotherapist can assess what is going on and give you a clear, active plan.
