Sports Injuries

From weekend sport to elite competition — physiotherapy can help you recover from injury and return to sport with confidence.

What it is

Sports injuries cover a wide range of muscle, tendon, ligament and joint problems that occur during training or competition. They can be sudden (such as a strain or sprain) or build over time with load. Rehabilitation and load management are essential to a confident return to sport.

Common symptoms

Everyone is different, but people often describe:

  • Pain during or after training or competition
  • Swelling, stiffness or reduced movement
  • Reduced strength, power or control
  • A sense of instability or guarding
  • Difficulty performing sport-specific movements

Likely causes

Contributing factors can include:

  • A sudden increase in training load or intensity
  • Insufficient recovery between sessions
  • Reduced strength, control or conditioning
  • Previous injury
  • Contact, collisions or awkward movements in sport

How physiotherapy can help

We support athletes of every level and all ages, and can help coordinate review with our onsite sports doctor where appropriate.
Physiotherapy may include:

  • A thorough assessment and clear diagnosis
  • Guidance on managing training load while you recover
  • Progressive, sport-specific strengthening and rehabilitation
  • A criteria-based approach to returning to sport
  • Coordination with our on-site Sports & Exercise Physician where appropriate

What to expect at your appointment

  • A discussion to understand your injury, sport and goals
  • A physical assessment relevant to your sport
  • A clear explanation and a structured plan
  • Progressions tailored to your return-to-sport goals

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Do you work with clubs and teams?

Yes. We provide physiotherapy to a number of local Adelaide sporting clubs including the Sturt Sabres Basketball Club, Cumberland United FC, Goodwood Saints FC and Metro Jets Netball club, and regularly support athletes across many sports.

When can I return to sport after an injury?

Return to sport is guided by your progress against specific milestones rather than time alone, to support a safe and confident return.

Can I see a sports physician if needed?

Yes. We have a Sports & Exercise Physician consulting on-site, so sports medicine and physiotherapy can work hand in hand when needed.
